I have just received my copy of the newsletter Homing In. In it, Brighton and Hove City Council declares that council staff will visit every tenant as part of the proposed transfer of the housing stock consultation. As there are, I believe, some 11,000 properties this will take well over three months, even if they manage to do 100 a day.
In addition, every household will receive a DVD presented by TV reporter James Trollope. This will mean some 13,000 videos will be sent out as leaseholders will also receive them.
Tenants and leaseholders have been subjected for many months to a steady stream of costly propaganda from the council, all designed to achieve a "yes" vote. Now at the eleventh hour, the council, still not certain of achieving this, has in desperation decided on these further measures.
I am appalled and disgusted by the many thousands of pounds that must have been spent on all this one-sided propaganda and the cost of these latest measures will push the final figure even higher. This is money that could have been used to for much needed refurbishment of council properties.
Surely a simple document containing all the arguments for and against the proposal could have been produced and circulated, allowing the tenants to make up their own minds on this matter.
Had this been done, the ballot could have already taken place and the matter dealt with.
