The UK is said to have about the seventh largest GDP in the world. This being the case, why should the UK be donating more than, say, Germany or France in overseas aid in these troubled times?

It seems to me that at least £2 billion a year could be spared from our huge foreign aid budget and used to bolster the NHS here in the UK, as well as shore up the legal aid budget and improve our flood defences.
