The i360: has any project ever been more hotly debated?

When Mr Kemp embarked on his vision of a new Brighton and Hove, were his grandiose ideas accepted without dissent or with ridicule?

Did he persist with his vision and turn it into reality? Yes – and what would the cityscape look like now without it?

Architects and designers with vision have been chastised throughout history but they all had certain things in common: vision, passion and not a little talent.

On a recent visit to London I took to the River Thames and marvelled at the magnificent, creative and awesome use of modern design and materials in our capital city’s landscape – giant, futuristic designs the Greeks and Romans would have been proud of nestling alongside the “old” historical buildings.

London’s vision and embrace of the future is what draws the best talent from across the world.

So, do I have a point? Yes. Firstly, thank you Brighton and Hove City Council for backing the vision of the i360.

But wait. Some readers may remember a previous letter of mine (February 5) in which, although backing the i360, I stated that I did not believe the council should risk money (albeit from central Government) on the project – especially if private investors wouldn’t take the risk.

I still hold that view. Are the council brave visionaries? Maybe, but is that the mandate? Probably not. Only time will tell.

To my second point: I’ve looked at the figures for the i360 and, like others, don’t think they stack up. The i360 does not go far enough, on its own, to be viable.

With a group of like-minded visionaries I intend to forward a set of plans and ideas to our leaders for consideration.

These plans would not cost the taxpayer a penny and would underwrite the second phase of the seafront arches renovation, enabling that money to be used on services. A further benefit would be a world-class visitor attraction benefiting from a major ice rink, concert and exhibition space, five-star hotel, world-renowned restaurant, shops, bars, museum and more. Here’s to the future?
