A TINY vial containing minute flowers made from old watch parts has “starred” in the first episode of new US drama Crossbones starring John Malkovich.

The vial was created by Brighton designer Chanchala Ariyaratne after her work was spotted on online marketplace website Etsy by the NBC show’s production team.

They were searching for a poison vial for a character played by British actor Richard Coyle to use in the opener of the series based on the life of the pirate Blackbeard, played by Malkovich.

“I couldn’t believe it when the producers contacted me and confirmed they were using my design,” said Chanchala, who has a studio in central Brighton. “I knew they were hunting all over the world and it was such a surprise they chose mine.”

The 35-year-old specialises in “turning junk into beautiful things” and began her line of Steampunk jewellery with a pile of watch and clock parts sent to her by her father from Sri Lanka.
