ARE your grandparents so fantastic they deserve an award and public recognition?
The Community Stars Awards are looking to crown an individual or a couple as Grandparent of the Year at its lavish ceremony in November.
Last year’s winners, Berni and Ernest Taylor, sent their nominations to The Argus by post and were on stage collecting their award weeks later.
Despite both suffering ill health, the couple continue to look after not only their own children but their children’s children.
Most grandparents have the luxury of being able to spoil their grandchildren before passing them back to their parents when the tears come.
But that isn’t the case for 49-year-old Berni and 60- year-old Ernest. The couple scooped Grandparent of the Year after detailing on their nomination form how they were full-time guardians for two of their grandchildren.
Despite Berni continuing to recover from a stroke and Ernest suffering from a bad hip, the pair devote their lives to making sure the 13-year-old and eight-year-old gets the best possible start in life.
Kelly Dhabia, Berni and Ernest’s daughter, said: “They are fantastic. They have given their lives to looking after the family. They work tirelessly 24/7 despite both having medical problems – but that doesn’t stop them, they’re amazing.”
