I have just finished reading Adam Trimingham’s excellent piece in The Argus of August 11, ‘Cherish ferry while you can’.

Yes he got everything spot on about the demise of the Cross Channel ferry at Newhaven and I agree with everything he wrote.

The thing he did miss out was the main reason for the demise of the ferry was the one-way road system.

It not only killed the ferry, it also killed the town centre because if you missed the turning or got in the wrong lane, you had to go round the stupid system again and most people carried on to Brighton.

Just ask any Newhaven resident what was the cause of the demise of Newhaven and they will say the one-way system.

The decline in foot passengers is due to a decrease in the time you get in Dieppe which at most is two hours and with only two ferries a day, day tripper numbers have gone down.

Will the ferry close at the end of the year? I hope it does not as it would be as I have said many times the final nail in the coffin for Newhaven and all who live there.

Ask Newhaven people will it close and most say no, it’s the French bluffing again.
