Welcome news came today in a report which rates Brighton and Hove as one of the most dynamic economic areas in the country.
Those in the know will be unsurprised to learn the city’s phenomenally successful creative digital and IT hub is behind the success. The sector is prosperous because of its mobile, forward-thinking workforce and close proximity to London.
Less celebrated are the unglamorous financial services which have kept the city afloat during hard times.
While tourism and hospitality which the city’s reputation was built on remain a crucial area that should not be forgotten.
The city’s ranking alongside the country’s elite is something to be celebrated.
But for sustainable, long term success a few areas need work.A critical lack of housing and commercial space blights the report and could yet bring the jubilation to a crashing halt.
Transport is another crucial factor. While Brighton and Hove thrives on being less than hour from London, many slate the rail network and roads for chronic underinvestment.
Recent investment pledges must lead to substantial change and not be revealed as empty politicking.
