Firefighters were called to a block of flats after a man fell asleep while cooking himself a meal.
Crews arrived at the building in Carlton Hill, Brighton, at about 1.30am this morning to find the man's flat filled with smoke.
They discovered a pan of food had been left on top of the cooker and had overheated.
A spokesman for East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said the flat was not badly damaged and nobody was injured in the incident.
