As a 70-year-old Englishman I can say that I have never viewed Scottish people as foreign but a part of the British family.

Unfortunately since the referendum I have had to change my view.

I was totally unaware of the bitterness and hatred that many Scots feel toward us.

I am sure that Alex Salmond is bitterly disappointed to find out that over 50% of Scots hold a more realistic view of the world than his nationalistic one.

To hear him this morning bitterly still trying to stoke up divisions appalled me.

His utterances today seem a far cry from two days ago when he jumped the gun and was saying how he would welcome the No supporters into ‘One Scotland’.

Does he not realise that his attitude of ‘I am right because I say so’ only holds good for the blind followers of petty nationalists. Does the Laird Salmond not understand democracy?

His assertion that Westminster is reneging already on its promises is ridiculous. It has about as much substance as his assertion that he could use the pound and have automatic entry into NATO and the EU.

I was hoping for a No vote but in conclusion I will say that perhaps even at great cost to us all a yes vote would have been better for us all.

To misquote Henry II: ‘Who will free us from these turbulent Nationalists?’
