CHILDREN learnt how to grow their own food when a garden centre celebrated its new look.
The Wyevale Garden Centre, Warren Road, Brighton, invited families to the event to mark the refurbishment and discover the important role plants play in Sussex.
Children and adults had the chance to pick up free gifts and learn plenty of tips to become green fingered at the Brighton Unearthed event.
There were gardening workshops, where children carved a design into a pumpkin, a cake competition, where visitors had to guess the mystery ingredient, and people took a tour of the new store thanks to a special map designed to help them spot a host of woodland creatures on the way.
Afternoon tea was served while a swing band entertained visitors alongside a magician and face painter.
Jason Cowell, garden centre manager, said: “Not only do plants produce the oxygen we need to breathe but everything we eat also comes directly or indirectly from plants.
“As we go about our busy day-to-day lives it is easy to forget their huge importance in our existence.
“We were keen to use the launch of our new-look garden centre to reinforce this message in a fun and inspirational way.”
