A CARPENTER who fell 20ft from a building site remains in a serious condition.

Dave Clarke was working at the stable block next to Stanmer House when he is believed to have fallen through a ceiling.

Three teams of paramedics were called at 8.30am on Tuesday and tried to treat Mr Clarke at the scene but firefighters were needed to help free him from the site.

Yesterday, a spokesman for Sussex Police said: “The injured man remains seriously ill in hospital.”

On The Argus website, well wishers left kind words for Mr Clarke. One said “come on Dave, keep the fight going pal” while another commented “sending all our love to you Dave”.

The Health and Safety Inspectorate is now investigating the fall.

Witnesses reported seeing at least seven emergency crews on the scene.

Crews moved him on to the cricket pitch in front of Stanmer House, where he was taken by air ambulance to St George’s Hospital in Tooting, London.

Planning permission to convert the stable block buildings into seven two-bedroom houses and one two-bedroom flat was granted by Brighton and Hove City Council in January last year.
