AGE is no barrier to success as the winners of this year’s Older People’s Day Awards can testify.

The awards celebrate the achievements and lives of the thousands of people aged 50 and over in Brighton and Hove and the surrounding areas and the valuable contribution they make to our community.

This year’s theme was Doing Something Different, and the scale and range of the winners has certainly exhibited that – whether it was about someone doing an abseil for the first time or a World War II veteran heading off to France for the D-Day celebrations on his own.

Closer to home, there have been others making an impact in a variety of ways, including in health, business and education.

It would be easy, after a lifetime of work, to sit back when you retire and do something for yourself.

But for many older people across Sussex this is simply not an option and they are continuing to make a difference in any way they can.

Much of this work is done behind the scenes and the people responsible are not looking for reward and recognition.

But there contributions should be honoured and recognised and that is why these awards are welcomed and appreciated.
