Residents are complaing of "stench to high heaven" after workers allegedly hit a sewage pipe on a building site.

Neighbours living close to Manor Place in Brighton have told The Argus that engineers were working throughout the night at the site of Brighton and Hove City council's former housing offices Robert Lodge which is currently being converted into flats.

One resident said: “I had been ill all night but I got myself dressed as best I could at 4am and there was drilling and sawing at the site.

“They are working on pulling down the old housing office and converting it into flats and they were digging away and hit a sewage pipe.

“The stench here, it smells to high heaven.

“It stinks so much I have had to keep all my windows closed.”

A Brighton and Hove City Council spokeswoman said: “We apologise for the inconvenience and disturbance caused to residents near Manor Place due to a sewage leak last night.

"Southern Water and council contractors moved swiftly to repair the pipe and clean the area.

"It appears the leak occurred during demolition work to make way for new development on the Manor Place site.

"The leak has been stopped and clean-up has been undertaken.

"We are doing all we can to make sure this is fully resolved as soon as possible.”
