Reading about plans for Circus Street reminded me of the days in the 1930s when some friends and I, inspired by Brighton Tigers ice-hockey team, formed a roller- skating hockey team.

We called ourselves the Richmond Hawks (we all lived in Richmond Street area) and used to practise on a Sunday afternoon in Circus Street when all the fruit and vegetable firms were closed.

Using our jackets to represent goal posts, we split ourselves into two small teams and played for around two hours, almost always without any disturbance from a vehicle. There was much less traffic in those days of course.

When a vehicle appeared it usually drove carefully as not to roll over our goal-post jackets.
