Yesterday the Union Flag came down at Camp Bastion and was folded away as the UK handed over its final base in Afghanistan and brought its bloody 13-year campaign there to an end.

Thousands of miles back home, the relatives of all those who fought and died there, including eight from Sussex, are left with memories of their loved ones and the hope that others remember them too.

Private Daniel Prior, 27, had just seen his first son born and only got to spend two weeks with him when he went back to Afghanistan and was killed by a bomb.

Guardsman Jamie Janes was just 17 when he started his army career and had only reached 20 when he was blown up on patrol in Helmand.

Guardsman Michael Roland, 22, a father of twins, always wanted to be in the army and was shot through the heart less than one month after arriving in Afghanistan. They are just three of the young men who said goodbye to their families and normal, comfortable lives to face a terrifying war for the sake of us and for others unknown to them. Never forgetting them is the very least we must do.
