BAMBOO was the order of the day for a zoo keen to feed its red pandas.

Drusillas Park in Alfriston revealed that satiating the appetites of the animals is an ongoing battle.

The red pandas at the park each consume up to 2KG of bamboo a day.

A local tree surgery and landscaping business, Chaffin Works, was harvesting bamboo from a private estate in Sussex and decided to deliver its off-cuts to the zoo.

Deposited two weeks ago, zoo manager Sue Woodgate said the crop is being put to good use.

She said: “Our own planatation has been struggling to keep up with the pandas’ enormous appetite so we are really grateful to Chaffin for this.

“It is fantastic when local companies can work together to help each other.”
