A DERELICT building was ablaze this afternoon in a major fire.  

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service was called to Hastings at 4.50pm.

The service responded to reports of smoke on the fifth floor of the derelict old arts college tower, on Archery Road.

At the height of the fire, six engines were on the scene fighting the flames, which could not be extinguished until 6.20pm.

A service spokesman said: “An investigation is underway to ascertain the cause of the fire.”

A Sussex Police spokesman said the force was called to assist with road closures on the junction of Highlands Gardens and Archery Road.
