£350 million has been promised by the Government to help tackle congestion on the A27.

Today the Government will announce the plan to tackle congestion at Arundel, Worthing and Lewes as part of £15 billion worth of investment in English motorways and roads over the next five years.

Councillor Neil Parkin, leader of the Adur District Council, said the £350 million was “nothing to be sneezed at” and the money was long overdue.

He said: “Whatever they do. I am delighted they have recognised our problems with the A27, which is more than the last government did.

“£350 million won’t sort out all the problems but it is a large lump in the right direction.”

Professor Stephen Glaister, director of the RAC Foundation, said: “The benefits won't be felt overnight because much of the work will take place towards the end of the next parliament, but we now have a commitment of funding and a firm list of schemes that the money will be spent on.”

Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin hailed the strategy as “the biggest, boldest and most far-reaching roads programme for decades”, while Chancellor George Osborne said it would “transform some of the country’s most important strategic routes”.
