AN independent art gallery is getting behind Small Business Saturday.
Art 5, a gallery in the Bartholomews area of Brighton, regards its exclusive status as one of the reasons it has survived as a small business.
Its owner, Paola Calise, said: “You have to work at the business all the time and hang in there.
“Every business has ups and downs – that’s the nature of retail.”
The gallery celebrated its tenth anniversary party last year. Ms Calise said: “It was a great achievement and I felt quite proud and happy that we made it.
“You have to ride through the rough times and wait for the good times to come back.”
Art 5 Gallery sells contemporary work, ranging from seascapes to still life, by local and international artists.
Ms Calise said Small Business Saturday “can certainly put new businesses on the map and help to promote them”.
The gallery is having a Christmas exhibition with five of its favourite artists, featuring small paintings and ceramics, from Friday until Christmas Eve.
Small Business Saturday is held on the first Saturday in December in an attempt to give local firms a boost.
Each day this week in the run up to Small Business Saturday, we will be featuring an independent Sussex company.
