A woman on the school run has become the first person to be charged with an offence as part of Sussex Police's Christmas crackdown on drink and drug-driving.

Emily Colbourne, 33, was arrested after officers were given information that she could be drink-driving while taking her children to school.

A firearms team that was in the area stopped her car in School Road, Upper Beeding, at 9.30am on 1 December and Colbourne was arrested.

Colbourne, of Nep Close, Henfield, was charged with drink-driving. She was released on bail to appear at Worthing Magistrates' Court on 27 January.

Harry Brown, 75, was arrested at 5pm on December 1 in Ledsham Close, St Leonards, after officers stopped his car because they were concerned that he was driving erratically.

Brown, of Willingdon Way, St Leonards, was charged with drink-driving, driving while disqualified, driving without insurance and possession of cannabis. He was released on bail to appear at Hastings Magistrates' Court on 17 December.

A 39-year-old man from Eastbourne was also arrested at 3.30pm on 1 December in Terminus Road, Eastbourne. He was released on bail until 27 January while officers carry out further inquiries.

For the first time, the December campaign is being run jointly by Sussex Police and Surrey Police alongside Sussex Safer Roads Partnership, Drive Smart in Surrey and the independent charity Crimestoppers.

As part of Operation Dragonfly - Sussex Police's year-round strategy to remove drink and drug-drivers from the streets - road policing unit officers are on dedicated patrols looking for offenders.

Teams will also respond to tip-offs from members of the public who see someone they know has been drinking getting into a car to drive.

The names of all those charged are being proactively published.

People in Sussex can text officers on 65999 with the details of people they suspect of drink or drug driving or visit www.operationcrackdown.co.uk.
