A shop assistant used a broom to ward off a burglar she caught climbing through a window.

The intruder was caught in the act at Bognor Cheque Exchange in the town’s High Street at about 9.30am on Tuesday.

Police say the staff member “thrust” a broom at the burglar before he ran off accompanied by two other men who were waiting outside.

All three were wearing black clothing and balaclavas. Police believe they drove off in a black '14' registered car with blacked out windows.

Detective Constable Graham Slack said; "This was a very unusual incident for that time of day. If you were in the area and saw these men, particularly if you saw them after they left the building."
