EIGHT local people have reported similarly suspicious phone calls.

Now, police and Hastings Borough Council are warning residents about a potential phone-based scam.

On Wednesday, November 26, it is thought someone claiming to be from the council had called a resident about a recent car accident they had been involved in.

Some reports mentioned that the caller also claimed to be investigating on behalf of the NHS.

The caller was unable to answer any questions they were asked which lead to more suspicion being raised and the calls being ended by the recipients.

Police said the motive for the calls was not completely clear but it is strongly suspected some form of fraud was being attempted.

Chief Inspector Paul Phelps, Hastings District Commander said: “Scam calls are a nuisance to our community and can be costly to those caught unawares.

“I am reassured that all the people who reported these calls to us did the right thing by not disclosing any personal details and terminating the call.

“If you know someone who is vulnerable due to their age or disability and you think would benefit from a visit from their local police community support officer, do contact us through our website www.sussexpolice.com and click on Local police team.”

Councillor Andrew Cartwright, the council's lead member for community and safety added: “A number of these calls were reported to our community contact centre last week and we advised residents never to give personal details to callers, especially bank details.

“We take scams like this very seriously indeed and issued warnings to the public immediately via social media and other press outlets.”
