Jack Spooner makes a powerful case about the need for the Tenancies (Reform) Bill to stop revenge evictions.

His letter rightly highlights the invaluable work of the Home Sweet Home campaign, which has my total support (Revenge evictions of tenants who ask for repairs could soon be made illegal, Letters, December 1).

His letter says I have ‘claimed to largely support the Bill’ to stop revenge evictions. I wanted to clarify that I fully back it and voted for it on behalf of the large number of private rented sector tenants in Brighton Pavilion.

Sadly, two Conservative MPs were allowed to deliberately drown out justice by effectively ‘talking out’ the Bill, which effectively blocked it, and was desperately irresponsible of them.

Despite this travesty of democracy, the fight is not over. No one should live in fear of eviction for simply asking for basic repairs to their home.

I hope amendments to the Consumer Rights Bill in the House of Lords next week will get the strong cross party support and backing needed to prevent the disgraceful practice of blackmailing people into putting up with cold, damp, mouldy and sometimes dangerous conditions for which sky high rents are charged.

Thank you to all the hundreds of my constituents who lobbied me on the issue, and to the great work and lobbying of organisations like Home Sweet Home, Citizens Advice Bureau, Brighton Housing Trust, and Generation Rent for all their work for better housing in the city.
