A town centre shop has been closed by police and a council under new anti-social behaviour powers.

Sussex Police and Eastbourne Borough Council closed The American Street Wear Shop in Susans Road, Eastbourne following reports of drug dealing and disorder from the address.

Police closed the premises on Thursday afternoon (December 4) and it is the first such closure to be actioned by Sussex Police.

Notice was served on the tenant at 3.30pm that day and the premises were boarded up by police.

The application, under Section 76 of the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014, was presented in Eastbourne Magistrates Court on Friday (5 December). Magistrates authorised closure for the maximum period of three months.

Sgt Ed Ripley from the Eastbourne Neighbourhood Policing Team said "The closure has attracted a lot of interest from local residents and businesses who had clearly been effected by the disorder from The American Street Wear Shop.

"We hope that this Order will send a clear message that we will not tolerate this behaviour in Sussex."
