CHRISTMAS came early as some of the county’s best musicians and choirs came together to put on a charity show.

The Argus Appeal’s Christmas Carol Concert was held at All Saints Church in Hove last night.

Bestselling Brighton author Peter James introduced the show and Sussex Police’s Assistant Chief Constable Steve Barry gave readings.

Hundreds of people packed out the church to hear the Christmas classics in the evening set up in aid of The Argus Appeal and The Martlets Hospice.

Performances were given by Opera Caelestis, Sussex Flutes, Hurstpierpoint College Choir, Brighton Chamber Choir and All Saints Church Choir, arranged by musical director Andrew Wilson.

David Goldin, chairman of the concert committee, said: “Once again it has been a magnificent concert. “We must thank the superb musicians, choirs and those who support The Martlets and The Argus Appeal by buying tickets.

“We remain grateful to Mrs Hunnisett for continuing to support the concert in her late husband Derek’s memory. “For him, this concert was the start of Christmas. “ Songs performed included famous Christmas carols such as God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, O Little Town Of Bethlehem and O Come All Ye Faithful.

Lucy Pearce, head of content at The Argus, said: “It was a wonderful evening and is a great start to the Christmas season for an amazing cause.”

Derek Hunnisett first brought the event to the church 11 years ago. He died in 2011, aged 79, but his wife Ellen is still involved in the event.

Ms Hunnisett said: “It was my husband’s favourite carol concert, a truly joyous beginning to the Christmas Season. Thank you to all the choirs, musicians, musical directors and speakers who made this memorable evening possible.”

The Argus Appeal, supported by Legal & General, has been helping those in need in the community for 57 years.

The Martlets is a local independent charity caring for adults with life-limiting diseases.
