Our motoring columnist Steph Savill runs Sussex-based FOXY Lady Drivers Club, the UK's only motoring club for women. It includes a network of female friendly garages, repairers and car dealers that meet demanding standards.

Last month FOXY won Tyresafe's prestigious Online and Social Media Award as a result of our campaign to raise awareness levels among women drivers about tyre safety. It's always nice to be recognised for doing something well, especially when it's done because it's the right thing to do, and not with money in mind.

This month, it's FOXY's tenth business anniversary and I feel just as proud about this achievement, especially as we struggled to fund doing the right thing in the first place!

When my husband and I set up FOXY Lady Drivers Club in December 2004, I could see that women drivers were set to outnumber their male counterparts on UK roads and that the overly masculine motor industry would need to ‘up’ its game to get things right for this influential and demanding female audience.

I also saw the opportunity to help women identify the best motoring buys (and guys!), encouraging them to buy wisely.

I quickly realised I needed to get savvy (as in foxy!) about standards in the motor industry or run the risk of recommending businesses claiming to be female friendly but without any supporting evidence to back this up.

So then we had an new objective: to identify measurably female friendly garages, accident repairers and car dealers based on minimum standards to do with quality, ethics, value for money, cleanliness and customer service. Knowing that so many women worry about being ripped off in garages and car showrooms, every motoring business we work with also has to sign a promise to 'never overcharge, patronise or sell women services they don't need'.

And surprise, surprise, from these business visits has come a third objective: to see more women in the motor industry, in customer facing sales roles of course, but also to actively encourage the best female managers and directors in other business areas to consider a sideways move into an automotive career. Because they are needed there...
