A team of experts who help people give up smoking have been praised for their work.

The stop smoking service run in Adur, Arun and Worthing has come second in an NHS national league table on how well services are being run.

The table was compiled by the Healthcare Commission, which is responsible for monitoring NHS performance.

It focused on factors including how the team worked with other organisations, cutting back on passive smoking and promoting healthy lifestyles.

The team was given a rating of excellent.

West Sussex director of public health Farhang Tahzib said: "We are delighted the efforts of the team have been recognised.

"In partnership with other local organisations, smoke-free initiatives have been successfully introduced in workplaces, shops, restaurants and cafes across the area.

"This year we have also supported hundreds of people to go smoke free and would encourage anyone thinking about stopping to get in touch."

Stop smoking services have specially trained advisers who offer free help and expert support on using stop smoking aids such as nicotine replacement therapy which are available on prescription.

One-to-one sessions, drop-ins and group sessions are all available in venues across the county.
