A GLOBETROTTER has been named the country’s top contributor to the TripAdvisor website after posting a hotel review every four days last year.

Grant Winborn, from Hove, left his job at RSA Insurance and decided to spend the year travelling the world.

But Mr Winborn decided he should give out updates on his travel experiences and religiously filled reviews on the popular travel website.

Under his online pseudonym Grant_UK he posted reviews for 87 different hotels including those in Singapore, Indonesia, South Korea, Japan, New Zealand and Argentina.

He said: “I always use the site before staying anywhere and I think it is quite important to give feedback.

“It can only be successful if people give back and keep posting. Last year I took a year out and went travelling so it only felt right I should give back to the site.

“My favourite accommodation was somewhere called Rocustel Hotel in Sokcho, Korea. It was incredibly cheap and very retro, it was like a pink castle next to a bus station and everyone there was just lovely.”

In total Mr Winborn has posted 251 reviews on TripAdvisor, having checked into 269 cities in 33 countries and travelled 319,920 miles.

While travelling he spent three months in South America, a month in New Zealand, a week in Sydney and eight months in Asia.

He said: “I always look at several reviews for somewhere to stay. I would normally look for at least five or six reviews and look for anything in common. When writing a review you need to be fair and give the good and the bad.

“I always include how clean a place is, directions on how to get there if it’s difficult to find, if there has been any problems and if people are nice. Cleanliness is the biggest thing.”

A spokesman for TripAdvisor said: “It is absolutely invaluable for our community to keep posting on our site.

“People like Grant are completely invaluable and we could not run the website without them.”
