Greens share the dismay of parents about the threat from government cuts to local children’s centres (Argus, January 6).
We have called on the Government to reinstate grant funding and have put forward local council tax increase proposals that would protect services including children’s centres, supported buses, public toilets and community grants.
Council budgets everywhere have been cut to the bone, while demand for services is rising.
The National Audit Office says many councils face bankruptcy in the next five years and the Financial Times has shown that, under the coalition government, council services have been cut more than any other part of the public sector.
Both Labour and the Tories support the same cuts programme and plan to cut funding to councils to zero in the next five years.
Greens believe there are choices available nationally and that cuts to council grant funding should stop.
This would ensure cherished services such as children’s centres are protected.

Brighton and Hove City Council deputy chair of the policy and resources committee
