We were delighted to read of Brighton and Hove City Council's decision to have fixed catchment areas for secondary schools admissions.

Finally, the council has been bold and brave enough to opt for a sustainable and equitable solution to the problem of the uneven distribution of the city's schools.

It has long been an injustice that some children in our city have the choice of two or three schools, while other children who do not live near any schools have to travel considerable distances to a school which has spare places but which might be the furthest from their home.

These changes mean all children in our city will have access to one of their nearest schools.

It also means children attending the same primary school will be able to move to secondary school with their classmates, greatly reducing the stress and anxiety which results from the current system.

Well done, the council. And by the way, our children are both settled in secondary schools and therefore the decision does not directly affect us.
