THE latest plans to convert a former boarding school into a housing development will be unveiled to residents today.

Housebuilder Linden Homes is hosting a public exhibition to reveal its latest designs to develop the former St Aubyn’s school site in Rottingdean.

The firm wants to build 105 new homes on the site of the school, which closed its doors to pupils in summer 2013 after 118 years.

The new plans propose a combination of two, three, four and five bedroom houses as well as a mix of flats available for open market and affordable prices.

The firm states there will be new village green style areas of public open space and the retention of protected trees.

The site will have 220 parking spaces, well in excess of the council’s minimum recommended standards, as well as a possible off-road parking site for residents along Steyning Road.

The public exhibition, which is being hosted in partnership with site owners the Cothill Educational Trust, who closed the school, will be in Rottingdean’s Whiteway Centre between 3pm and 8pm.

A planning brief drawn up by council officers after consultation with residents has asked for any development of the site to retain the £2 million grade II listed school building and allow for open space and public recreation grounds.

Linden Homes state the plans include the “sensitive conversion” of the former main school house into “attractive” new apartments.

Former alumni of the school include Ukip donor Stuart Wheeler, former Albion star Adam Virgo, bestselling author William Shawcross and Government minister Hugo Swire.

Peter Youll, Linden Homes’ managing director, said: “We recognise the value of local discussions and, having spoken to immediate neighbours and councillors, we now present our draft proposals to the wider community.

“We understand the interest residents have in this site and are keen to hear views before we carry out further work on the proposals.

“The event will provide all interested parties with the opportunity to take a look at our draft scheme, discuss it with our team and provide us with feedback.”
