Sussex woke up to a blanket of snow today which led to delays and disruptions during the rush hour and many schools being closed.

Police reported long queues of traffic as lorries and cars struggled to negotiate slippery roads.

There were a number of minor collisions as motorists grappled with the conditions.

Central Sussex was the worst affected area with Burgess Hill, Horsham and Crowborough experiencing blizzard-like weather first thing, making driving hazardous.

There was hardly any snow along the coast, where there was rain, but further inland the snow fell more heavily.

Main roads such as the A23 at Handcross and the A22 at Ashurst Wood were particularly badly affected while the A283 at Petworth was shut because of a jack-knifed lorry.

Council gritters were also out in force on the roads to try and clear them before the rush hour hit.

Snow had to be cleared from a runway at Gatwick Airport first thing and this led to 20 flights being cancelled.

Passengers are advised to call their airline company before leaving.

Police also warned people to avoid going out unless it was absolutely necessary.

Brighton and Hove Bus and Coach Company was experiencing some delays earlier in the morning but by 9am it was running a normal service.

Train passengers faced minor delays of up to 15 minutes across the network which was caused by drivers going more slowly because of the conditions.

Some services were also liable to last minute cancellations and passengers were warned to check before travelling.
