The secondary school admissions decision was a victory for common sense and compromise (The Argus, February 3).

Patcham parents achieved their aim of guaranteed places at a local secondary school within walking distance. They will no longer have to hike across Brighton to Falmer.

Parents in central and east Brighton finally have priority access to some of the city's secondary schools.

No system is perfect. Some central Brighton parents still face a lengthy journey to secondary schools in Hove. But at least we no longer have to face the charade of having to tour the closest secondary schools knowing there is no hope of geting a place.

Thanks to all on the children, families and schools committee for their hard work and the courage to take a tough decision in the face of violent intimidation from some parents.

It's almost enough to restore your faith in local democracy.
