Despite what J Contreras says (Letters, January 23), like all MPs part of my job is to take up issues on behalf of all residents of the constituency I represent, whether they are relative newcomers such as Mr Ovunc or have lived here all their lives.
In the case of Mr Ovunc's desire to seek asylum in this country, I know my concerns about his safety should he be returned to Turkey were shared by long-term local residents, including representatives of the Church of England who contacted me.
