I write in response to RG Jenkins' letter entitled "It wouldn't work"

(January 29).

He theorises about a council chamber consisting of 54 independent councillors and asserts this would be politically unworkable because they would be unable to choose a leader.

He then uses this as a reason for not voting for an independent.

Has Mr Jenkins never heard of co-operation? This scenario is often played out when there is no overall control.

I have more faith a leader would emerge, and how refreshing it would be for this appointment to be based on merit and consensus rather than the pre-anointed choice of leader which occurs within established parties.

Mr Jenkins says the party system is necessary for long-term planning and a degree of predictability.

When has any political party had any long-term plans? Short-termism based on vested interests is the norm.

More people than ever are voting for independents because they are disillusioned with the present political status quo and want someone who truly represents them.

Independents are better able to promote the needs of their constituents without having to constantly look over their shoulder to check with their party machine.

This is why I will be standing as an independent in the May elections.
