Students are calling for answers over the future of their crisis-hit college.

Students and parents have called for City College Brighton and Hove to break its silence over money owed to suppliers, missed exam dates and its plans for a new development set to cost £79 million.

A week on from appointing Cobb PR the youngsters still fear for the future of their courses as no announcements have been made.

Cathy Biggs, whose son left the college last summer, said: “If I was a parent now I would be absolutely outraged.

“They need to be open and transparent and they’re not.”

One student, who did not want to be named, said: “The silence obviously speaks volumes.

“The fact that they've hired a PR company to dodge the answers that students obviously want to hear says it all.”

This newspaper exclusively revealed on February 2 that the college had failed to pay a number of suppliers.

Documents seen by this newspaper suggest that the total amount owed by the college is in the tens of thousands of pounds.

The college’s under-fire principal and chief executive Lynn Thackway resigned on the day of our report, citing a family illness.

The Argus then revealed that students had been left in limbo after the cash-hit college was unable to pay exam boards.

Businesses told how the college’s cash flow problems would impact on suppliers across the city.

One business owner, who did not wish to be named, said: “It’s bad enough for any business, especially a small or medium-sized business.”

The embattled college was then paid a visit by Government inspectors from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills to assess its financial standing.

Following concerns from students and parents, The Argus asked the college a number of questions (see below) but no statements have been made.

The student added: “The problem has got so far out of control, nobody knows what's going on.

“I have more sympathy for the lecturers who have been made redundant or forced out.”
