Young people in rural Sussex are being offered mopeds on short-term loans so they can travel to work or school.

Teenagers are being handed the motorcycles to whisk them off to interviews and training courses around the region.

Horsham District Council hopes the initiative could help boost the number of youngsters learning skills or in work.

The scheme is available to 16 to 19-year-olds as a stop-gap for those learning to drive or saving up to buy their own scooter.

The 2Wheels+ project is expected to open up new education opportunities for teenagers in areas without public transport and improve their chances of finding a job.

It is also aimed at relieving pressure on youth services by reducing the number of young people not in education, training or employment.

The mopeds will be available for six to ten months and a financial contribution of £90 a month - or £45 for Leisure Access Card holders - is expected towards the cost of the loan.

But if the moped is returned in a reasonable condition and no insurance claims have been made, half the fees will be reimbursed.

The mopeds have a speed limiter device set at 31mph and the council also provides all riders with a safety helmet, padded jacket, reflective bib and gloves free of charge All riders will be forced to take basic training paid for by the council.

Two young people have already signed up for the scheme and the council is urging more to come forward. Lynne Murray, the scheme's manager, said: "Difficulties with local transport can cause major barriers for people when travelling to places of employment or education.

"Young people in rural areas in particular can face situations where without a job they cannot afford to buy a car or motorcycle.

"And without transport of their own, their choice of education, training or employment is limited.

"We have recognised this and we hope the scheme will help increase participation and achievement in education and employment."

Councillor Vivien Lyth, cabinet member for community partnerships and housing services, said: "So far we have two young people from the district taking up moped loans and I hope more people will follow.

"The aim of this initiative is to help young people get into regular employment through various avenues including education, apprenticeships and college."

The programme has already proved a success in Surrey and a handful of other authorities in the South East since it was first launched in 2004.
