Two schools have received a clean bill of health following visits by Government education inspectors.

Springfield First School, Sackville Road, Worthing, was described as "outstanding" and Elm Grove Primary School, Elm Grove, Worthing, as "good".

Springfield caters for 172 youngsters and Elm Grove 245 all aged between four and eight.

On Springfield, run by headteacher Valerie Lavender, the inspectors said: "This is an outstanding school which continues to give pupils a high quality of education. Parents are very supportive "From early morning when pupils arrive for Breakfast Club and Book Buddies, to the end of the day when after-school clubs begin, the school is alive with learning."

However, the school was advised that it should "raise standards and achievement in writing to match those in reading and mathematics".

Elm Grove was judged a good school, the report stating: "Pupils enjoy coming because the good curriculum is stimulating. It successfully engages them and creates in them a desire to learn.

"Standards are above average and pupils achieve well. Parents are very supportive of the school, and many speak highly of the education which is provided for their children.

"Pupils are courteous and polite, and they really enjoy school, as shown by their good attendance. The headteacher, Pauline Warren, and other members of both the staff and the governing body are a dedicated team, providing good leadership and management."
