A SUSSEX chip shop has been named amongst the best in the country for its amazing chips.

To mark National Chip Week, The Argus takes a look at Sussex’s best fish and chips.

Trident Fish, Albert Parade, Eastbourne

The Argus:

TRIDENT Fish, in Eastbourne is spearheading its way into the future with plans for healthy grilled seafood, mash and, shock horror, even menu items not containing any fish or potatoes at all in their new extended 140 seat restaurant. But for now the takeaway in Albert Parade, Eastbourne, is content with having the best chips in East Sussex.

Customers voted in their masses to help Trident batter stiff competition. As part of the Chip Choice initiative organised by the British Potato Council as part of National Chip Week they have won the title of having the best chips in East Sussex.

Owner Demetrios Photiou told The Argus: “For us it’s all about looking after the product, fresh produce and customer service.

“We just want to attract people in here and when they come they love the chips.

“The most popular dish is still cod, then followed by haddock, huss and plaice.”

Mr Photiou is in to process of refurbishing his business. Having bought the shop next door he plans to move the takeaway counter and extend their restaurant from 50 to 140 covers.

He added: “We have just bought the shop next door and we’ll be moving the takeaway in there. Then the existing shop will be shut and refurbished. We’ll be doing more different stuff, grilled fish and Dover sole and things and more healthy options like mash and veg.”

Kate Cox at Potato Council, said: “Here in Great Britain we are undoubtedly a nation of chip lovers and Chip Week is a fantastic celebration of our great British food tradition. Us Brits feel strongly about supporting our local chippy, so it’s no surprise so many people took the time to vote for their favourite in the Choice Chip Awards this year.

 

Bardsley's, Baker Street, Brighton

BARDSLEY’S Bardsley’s in Baker Street has been run by the same family in Brighton since 1926.

Owner Roy Brown has recently retired but handed over the reins to his son Neil. Neil has been working at the shop for almost 30 years. “It’s a long apprenticeship,” said Roy, who is hoping his seven year old grandson will one day also take over the takeaway.

After 88 years in the business very little has changed and is still very much a family affair with Roy’s wife Muriel and brother also behind the counter.

Roy said: “Nothing changes.

We’d never change our recipe. Although at the moment we’ve got some fantastic Norweigan black cod which is only available for a three or four weeks a year. We always have great cod but this is extra special.”

Bardsley’s is often ranked amongst the best chip shops in Britain and boasts a room dedicated to Brighton- born music hall icon Max Miller.

For the fourth generation of the Bardsley family business is booming.

Roy added: “With the market reopening round the corner and 385 students about to come to the end of our road, things couldn’t be better.

“Despite what Freddie Flintoff is saying on the TV fish and chips definitely isn’t going out of fashion.”

 

Palm Court, Palace Pier, Brighton

PALM COURT on the Palace Pier FISH and chips on the pier is a Brighton institution.

TV chef Heston Blumenstal visited tucked in to a plate at Palm Court on the Palace Pier while filming in the city. While working behind the counter he added his unusual pickled onion atomiser, but it’s not included in the usual condiment offering.

 

Chipwick, Brighton Road, Worthing 

The Argus:

CHIPWICK, Brighton Road Worthing WITH a host of awards Chipwick, just off the seafront on Brighton Road, is arguably Worthing’s best chip shop.

It was awarded a Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence in 2014 and two thirds of people on the review website rated it excellent.

Argus reporter Ben Leo once saw Paul Weller in there too.

 

Kings Arms, Rotherfield

The Argus:

 

THERE’s a girl who works in a Rotherfield chip van who is Elvis’ daughter.

Lisa-Marie Presley may have been born in Graceland, but has been known to grace the chip van at the Kings Arms, in Rotherfield.

Elvis’ daughter who lives nearby is good friends with owners Kim and Justin Scales who also run a food van – Mr Chippy.

Mr Scales said: “We have the van and Lisa- Marie decided to jump on and have a go – she had a glass of Prosecco with her too.

“We’ve become friends with her and her son.

“She had a go at frying and he had a go at serving.”

About their food they say: “We are also believers in hearty portions and our fish is especially well renowned, so you can be sure you won't be disappointed.”

 

The Regency, Regency Square, Brighton 

The Argus:

IT’S not a takeaway, and naming them amongst the great and the good of the city’s chippies may spark controversy, but the Regency is world famous for its fish suppers.

As well as their fancier seafood fare they also serve up a cracking plate of chips and have a reputation that makes them legendary in China.

Highly rated by the likes of Jay Rayner and Rick Stein the Regency is also a huge hit with Chinese visitors.

The restaurant is so critically acclaimed on Chinese websites that it is almost always full of Oriental visitors looking for a fish supper. And they’re rarely disappointed.

 

Wolfies, Goldstone Villas, Hove 

The Argus:

 Wolfies is part traditional chip shop part modern twist.

As well as serving up traditional pie and mash shop liquor with the fish and chips, at their shop in Goldstone Villas, Hove, they also offer gluten free batter, sustainable fish breeds and unconventional specials.

 

Bankers, Western Road, Brighton 

The Argus:

 WINNERS of numerous awards including the 2012 National Fish and Chip Award and listed in Fry Magzine’s top 50 Bankers is a sure fry choice.

General manager Ian McConnell said: “We just keep doing things the way we always have and that’s what people like and keeps them coming back.

“People want a good meal that’s good value for money and that’s what we try to do.”
