Scores of schoolchildren watched Brighton and Hove Albion pick up a valuable league win thanks to the club’s charitable arm and The Argus.

Youngsters from schools across Sussex saw Saturday’s seven goal thriller against Birmingham after winning a contest to see The Seagulls in action.

Entrants were asked to highlight what their class or group had done to be recognised.

The School Shelf contest, organised by club charity Albion In The Community and The Argus, was part of ongoing efforts to inspire youngsters.

Those treated to Albion’s 4-3 win included footballers from West Hove Dynamos Under 9s and children from special-needs group Brighton Pebbles.

Kate Stone, of the under 9s, said: “It was a brilliant day and the club really looked after us.

“The kids had loads of fun watching the game, which was packed with goals, and they were even featured on the fan zone section of the big screen.

“They were also given a shout-out on the microphone and had all sorts of fun playing with the big foam fingers that were left on the seats. It was brilliant and we’re really thankful.”

Hector Tidey, nine, of Brighton, said: “I’ve had a really good day. I found out we had won a couple of weeks ago and had been looking forward to it ever since.

“I’ve been to Albion before but it’s nice coming with my friends from football.”

Edward Stone, also nine, added: “I was very excited. I play on the left wing for my club so I enjoyed watching Albion up close to try and get some tips.” Albion’s first home win in more than a month came courtesy of goals from Inigo Calderon and Joao Teixeira.

Dawn Sweeney, managing director at The Argus, said: “Sussex youngsters get through so much good work in the county but sadly a lot goes unnoticed.

“This was our way of thanking them for the amazing things they do which may sometimes be taken for granted.

“All you have to do is flick through the pages of Youth in Action every week to realise how many groups, classes and individuals are worthy of these tickets.”
