A woman miraculously survived a fall off Beachy Head cliffs this afternoon (Monday).

The 20-year-old fell shortly after 1pm.

A search and rescue operation was launched with the help of Bournemouth police helicopter, Sussex Police, the Coastguard and Eastbourne RNLI.

The woman escaped with only minor injuries and was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton for treatment.

A spokeswoman from Sussex Police said: "At 1.05pm on Monday (23 February) police and Coastguard went to Beachy Head after a report that a woman had fallen from the cliff edge.

"A 20-year old woman was recovered from part way down the cliff just before 3pm and taken by coastguard helicopter to the Royal Sussex County Hospital to be treated for what are understood to be minor injuries, and for a welfare assessment."
