THE sky’s the limit for one proud mum this Mother’s Day as she was wined and dined by her newly qualified pilot son.

Cathy and Joe Davis are one of only a handful of British Airways’ mother and son flying teams, but insist on remaining the consummate professionals – even if cabin crew purser Mrs Davis is occasionally referred to as mum.

The pair, who live in Worthing with husband and father Paul, both work on short-haul commercial flights for British Airways.

Mr Davis was inspired to gain his wings after spending summers travelling with his mother as a child.

The 23-year-old, who graduated from Leeds University, said: “My Mum was definitely my inspiration to become a pilot.

“I grew up watching her putting on her uniform and flying around the world.

“Ever since I was a child I knew I wanted to fly.

“Mum used to take me on trips with her back in the days when you were allowed on the flightdeck.”

The first officer – who joined British Airways through the airline’s Future Pilots Programme – took to the skies in May and has already flown to more than 47 different cities, including Berlin, Cairo and Rome.

Mr Davis said: “On a recent flight we did together, Mum did keep asking if I wanted a cup of tea. It is fine though as she’s not too embarrassing and doesn’t fuss too much.”

Although the duo won’t be flying together on Mother’s Day – as Mr Davis will be jetting off to Paris – he did treat his mother to a special meal on a trip to Athens earlier this week.

Mrs Davis, 55 – who has been flying for more than 30 years – said she was “extremely proud” to see her son in the cockpit.

She said: “I’m delighted that Joe has carried on the family tradition. Flying is clearly in our genes. It feels incredibly special working with him as this has always been his dream.”
