Firefighters tackled a blaze that destroyed a bungalow this morning.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue was called by a passer-by who saw the fire taking hold at 9am in Celandine Close, Broadfield, Crawley.

Two fire engines - one from Crawley, one from Horsham - were sent to the scene along with two from Reigate in Surrey.

Someone was initially unaccounted for, though it is now understood the property was vacant after its previous occupier, an elderly woman, died two or three weeks ago.

Eyewitnesses said the street was "smothered in smoke".

Other media reports suggest that police officers and firefighters are investigating if the fire was arson.

A West Sussex Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said: "There's nothing more the fire service can do and it's been handed over to police."
