Police may investigate a coin throwing incident during Brighton and Hove Albion's defeat at Brentford on Saturday.

The coins landed in the penalty area, missing Brentford goalkeeper Nathan Abbey as the Seagulls lost 1-0 to the Bees.

Hertfordshire-based referee Keith Hill spoke to his assistants about the incident at Griffin Park but it is not known if he will file an official report.

After the game, Bees manager Scott Fitzgerald said he had spoken to the referee about the incident but it was not known if Brentford would make a formal complaint.

A Metropolitan policewoman confirmed they were aware of a coin being thrown on to the pitch during the game.

She said: "Officers at the game were aware of a message over their radios that a coin had been thrown.

"At this stage I cannot say if we have received an official complaint about the incident or not. I am not aware of one. However, if there was the risk someone might have been hurt, we do not need to receive a complaint before we can investigate an incident."

There was also a half-time incident where a Seagulls fan got on to the pitch, got the away fans singing "We want Falmer" and then had a kickabout with substitute Tommy Fraser before scoring a penalty.

Both incidents were seen by Albion fans, who were quick to condemn the coin throwing on the club's Northstandchat website.

One said: "Whoever threw a coin at the Brentford keeper, people like that give the club a bad name and give fuel to all those who would prefer we didn't get a new stadium."

Another added: "The coin throwing was out of order and while I can't possibly condone encroaching on the playing area, he had no intention of causing problems.

"He was just having a bit of a laugh."
