What is worrying about the debate at the budget setting meeting at Brighton and Hove City Council (Letters, March 6) is what the Conservatives didn't say.

They hinted at what might come if they take over in May by calling for "a grown-up conversation with residents about what the city can afford", but refused to reveal their budget.

In Hammersmith and Fulham this time last year, the Conservative group also refused to say what their budget plans were. After winning control they set about closing three local schools, cut hundreds of thousands of pounds from care and sacked 160 home helps.

The cost of meals on wheels there has risen by 25 per cent. Spending on street cleaning has been cut by £1 million and the local affordable homes programme has been abolished. They have even raised burial charges by more than 50 per cent. However, they spent £1 million on a new council logo.

Conservatives here say that Toryrun Hammersmith and Fulham council is an example they would like to emulate. So what services are they planning to cut here?
