To Judge from Hangleton Labour candidate Mr Sears' letter (Letters, March 6), he has nothing positive to say about Labour's record, and simply tries to smear the Conservatives.

Mr Sears writes that "the Tories showed no inclination to say how or what they would do better", so he cannot have been listening to the debate.

We said quite clearly the Conservatives will "do things better" by: Bringing in four-year spending plans to control council tax Setting clear spending guidelines for departments Stamping out budget overspends Matching policy to resources, not the other way around.

If successful Conservative councils like Crawley, East Sussex and Wandsworth can do it, we will do it here.

We note the irony of the candidate's comment on the Conservative budget amendment on improved safety at the Dyke Road/Old Shoreham Road junction.

As the proposal was not in Labour's budget, he therefore highlights one thing the Conservatives have "done better" than Labour (and does not say whether he supports it).
