A long-awaited consultation on the future of hospital facilities in East Sussex will focus on maternity services only.

East Sussex Downs and Weald Primary Care Trust and Hastings and Rother PCT are proposing to have one specialised consultant-led maternity unit at either Eastbourne DGH or the Conquest Hospital in Hastings.

Midwife-led maternity services will be provided at other hospitals in the area, including the Crowborough Birthing Centre.

Specialist baby care and gynaecology services will be provided alongside the consultant-led unit.

Today the health bosses unveiled the plans for the future of health services in East Sussex.

A joint meeting of the two PCTs will be held on Friday in Uckfield.

They are aiming to launch a consultation into the proposals, which will run for 15 weeks, on March 26.
