It was with dismay I learned the primary care trust (PCT) is not going to commence the "consultation" regarding the future of our hospitals until after the local elections in May. This decision can only be described as cynical.

Hundreds of Worthing residents heard the strategic health authority and the PCT declare, at the public meeting held in the Pavilion last August, that they would be going to "consultation" in September.

Worthing residents could be excused for asking what has changed to cause such a delay.

I can only guess the answer is that the PCT has been overwhelmed by the public anger at their proposed cuts.

I have also read with dismay the report that the Secretary of State for Health has issued a guide in "media handling", urging the Trusts to use such words as "adapting" or "evolving" when talking about cuts. The closing of A&Es is to be dressed up as "reconfiguring".

Have we really waited six months just for this spin? This further delay has caused us to rethink our campaign and the demonstration planned for Saturday April 7 is postponed. It will now take place to coincide with the release of the "consultation", whenever that is.

We will also take time to remove all the spin from the document and inform you of exactly what the PCT is saying.

The KWASH campaign will keep everyone up to date with the next steps and we look forward to your continued support.

In the meantime we now have an office ready to go, and would appreciate any help undertaking the considerable work ahead of us.
