Anglers have been brought to court in a crackdown on illegal fishing.

The Environment Agency revealed yesterday ten anglers were successfully prosecuted in February for fishing without a licence in Sussex and ordered to pay a total of £1,265 in fines and costs.

The agency reminded fishermen they only have until Saturday, March 31, to renew their rod licences.

Dafydd Evans, head of fisheries, said: "Fishing for salmon, trout, freshwater fish and eels in England and Wales requires a licence from the Environment Agency. Failure to have a licence is an offence. Those caught fishing illegally face tough penalties, including fines of up to £2,500 and a ban from fishing."

The licence system is used to protect vulnerable fish stocks.

New rod licences can be bought from post offices and some shops or on 0870 1662662 and at www.environment-agency.gov.uk/rodlicence.
