A father who stabbed a man in the stomach after a row in a pub has been jailed.

Anthony Boden, 41, used a lock knife with a six inch blade to wound his victim outside the Buccaneer pub in Eastbourne in June last year.

James Sutherland, 30, was seriously injured in the attack. He needed a two and a half hour operation to repair lacerations to his bowel and 28 stitches to the wound.

At Lewes Crown Court Boden admitted wounding with intent. He also pleaded guilty to a violent attack on his former partner in September 2005 at her home in Fitzherbert Road, Brighton, in which he punched her so hard in the face her teeth were imbedded in her cheek.

The court heard Boden, of Jevington Gardens, Eastbourne, and Mr Sutherland knew each other and when they met up at the pub in Compton Street, Boden was behaving in a loud and aggressive and threatening manner.

Richard Cherrill, prosecuting, said the two men went outside and after an exchange of words Boden suddenly stabbed Mr Sutherland.

The attack on his former partner Jacqueline Hunter happened after an argument in front of their children.

Mr Cherrill said: "He lost his self control, he punched her on her cheek, it was a blow at some ferocity and knocked her back eight foot slamming her into a wall and she fell to her knees.

"She was dazed and when she came to her teeth were imbedded in the side of her cheek."

Richard Elliott, defending, said Boden, who has previous convictions for wounding and threatening behaviour, has shown remorse.

Judge Richard Hayward told Boden: "Only a custodial sentence is appropriate to punish you and to mark public disapproval to such violence."

He was jailed for a total of five years and two months. He was sentenced to three years and ten months for wounding with intent plus a further 16 months for assault causing actual bodily harm to his former partner.
